The other side of the coin: Prosocial behavior, ourselves and our students

Abstract:
Prosocial education is a broad, umbrella term that includes a wide variety of approaches, activities and strategies that all strive to address the social-emotional learning needs and realities in our classrooms. It is often referred to in the literature as the other side of the coin  - one side being the academic experience of our learners and this one being the social-emotional experience; two sides of the coin that are impossible to separate. It is growing as a field of study, programing and focus as parents, teachers, administrators and legislators develop a deeper understanding of how helping learners engage in prosocial behavior leads to better learning for everyone. In this workshop Mary will share some of her experiences this summer at the University of California Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center’s Summer Institute for Educators. We will explore themes such as happiness, mindfulness, awe, and empathy, which research has shown to instrumental for well-being students and teachers alike. Please come ready to share your own experience, engage in activities and consider how prosocial learning and behavior might support you and your learners!
